• The BIST100 continued its upwards trend, adding nearly another 1% to its gains from the previous day, and closing at 8170, with a turnover of TRY 87.3bn, led by the gains in the Industrial-Mining and Energy stocks, whereas the Banks decoupled negatively from their peers.
• AKSEN (due to operation and ownership of a 255 MW natgas combined cycle power plant in Senegal)-KOZAA and SASA were yesterday’s biggest gainers, whereas BIMAS-YKBNK and GARAN were the most sold-but mainly on the back of profit-takings.
• As of print, the TRY is trading considerably weaker against the USD at 30.33, and weaker against the Euro at 32.90, while the DXY has relaxed slightly to 103.55. Both the 2yr and 10yr rates rose by 55bps and 36bps to 43.42% and 27.43%, respectively.
• On the Commodity front, Brent is trading higher this morning, compared to yesterday’s session closing figure at $81.73, and Ounce GOLD has risen to $2023, as of print.
• The ECB kept the interest rates steady, but unlike President Lagarde said at Davos, this time gave no hints at rate cuts, but flagged significant positive progress on inflation.
• Yesterday, the CBRT raised the policy rate by 250bps to 45%, in-line with the market expectations, and in the MPC Report, stated that the level of monetary tightness required for disinflation has been reached, and added that the current level of the policy rate will be maintained until there is a significant decline in the underlying trend of monthly inflation and until inflation expectations converge to the projected forecast range. The Committee will reassess the stance of monetary policy if notable and persistent risks to inflation outlook emerge.
• Last Week, Foreign Investors were net BUYERS of $146mn EQUITIES, but net SELLERS of $40mn BONDS.
AGENDA:
• On the local front today, the Bloomberg January Economic Survey will be disclosed, and the US will release the Personal Income and Spending numbers.
CORPORATE:
• Sunflower Oil: According to the Official Gazette, the import tax on sunflower seeds and raw sunflower oil have been lowered to 12% from 27% and to 22% from 36%, respectively. This may reflect negatively onto ALMAD shares.
• ASELS: Disclosed yesterday during the session that it signed a €24.7mn agreement.
