• The BIST appeared to have quickly got past Gaye Erkan’s resignation on Friday, surging 1.28% higher to 8777, and with a turnover of TRY 105.6bn, thanks to the swift appointment of Fatih Karahan as the new CBRT governor, as well as the supportive foreign reports that calmed investor sentiment.
• The Transportation-specially Aviation, REITs and Mining were yesterday’s best performing sectors, beating the benchmark, while the Banks also showed a strong performance, rising on average 1.67%, but the Conglomerates faced a slight profit-taking after last week’s rally.
• On the BIST30 side, SASA-ALARK and THYAO were yesterday’s best performers, whereas SAHOL faced profit-takings, thus finding itself at the bottom of the BIST30 rankings, followed by ENKAI and ARCLK. Amid speculations of inclusion into the coveted MSCI listings, CCOLA closed the day 7.08% higher.
• As of print, the TRY is trading flat against the USD at 30.57, but weaker against the Euro at 32.90, while the DXY has cooled off compared to yesterday to 104.30.
• On the Bonds’ front, the 2yr rates saw a slight rise by 2bps to 43.14%, while the 10yr rates fell by 15bps to 27.46%.
• On the Commodity front, Brent is trading flat, hovering around the $78 ticker, and Ounce GOLD has risen a tad to $2029, as of print.
• Türkiye’s January inflation rose by 6.7% on a monthly basis, its highest reading since August, while the annual reading came at 64.86%, vs the expected 6.5%. Food, beverages and tobacco, as well as transportation, all increased between roughly 5% and 7% month on month, while housing was up 7.4% since December.
• The OECD increased Türkiye’s 2024 growth forecast to 2.9% from the previous 2.7% level.
AGENDA:
• On the local front, the REER will be disclosed today, whereas on the international front, the Eurozone will be releasing its Retail numbers, and Germany will be announcing its monthly factory orders.
• Various Fed Presidents will also be speaking today.
CORPORATE:
• TSKB: Disclosed a quarterly NI of TRY 2.01bn in-line with the market estimate of TRY 1.988bn, and a 2023 annual NI of TRY 7.04bn vs the market estimate TRY 7.02bn. NII was at TRY 10.2bn. For 2024, the Bank expects NII margin of 6%, 40% ROE, and NPL below 3%.
• VESTL: Disclosed that together with its global subsidiaries, initiated a compensation lawsuit in the amount of EUR 2,053,200,000 arising from the competition laws, against Samsung, LG Group companies, Technicolr S.A., TTD International S.A.S and TDP SP. Z.O.O. According to the court decision, two defendants (TTD International S.A.S and TDP SP. Z.O.O.) were ordered to pay Vestel a compensation in the amount of EUR 684,400,000; whereas the case was rejected for the other defendants.
